Preparing for your spray tan:

Reasons  for exfoliating

The spray tanning solution affects only the dead skin cells. Your skin has a build up of dead skin cells on top of it. The thicker the layer, the sooner the tan will rub off. If you exfoliate, the layer will be very shallow, and it will take a while for it to “build up”. Your tan will last longer. It is important to use an exfoliating glove and products that don't contain any oils, otherwise the oily barrier can stop the spray tanning solution getting through.

Highly recommended for a perfect exfoliation is the Dermasuri Exfoliating glove, available at Attagirl - no other lotions or scrubs required with these gloves, as you would use with water only!

It is important that you exfoliate your skin the night before the spray Tan. (preferably not the day of) unless done at least 8 hours before your appointment.

We recommend you use exfoliating gloves and refrain from a scrub that contains oils

Avoid certain soaps/scrubs on the market in South Africa  that  are well known to have extra moisturising creams/oils in them eg. Dove, as even though they are fantastic soaps, they may affect the results of your spray tan,  as they can tend to leave a moisturising barrier.

Exfoliation is important so the skin can be a clean, even canvas. If the spray tan is applied on uneven skin ( ie. not exfoliated properly),  as the days go by, the older dead skin cells will come off first causing the tan to possibly fade poorly.

Do NOT have any existing self tanner or an old spray tan on you . That would be like putting polish over an existing chipped manicure. It might look good the first day but may not last, and may fade unevenly.

ax or shave at least 8 hours before.

And oils, lotions, perfumes or deodorant the day of the tan as they can act as a  barrier and cause streaking or a certain percent  of  color from being absorbed in areas .

Do not shower right before your appointment as the steam will open the pores and your body gets hydrated. This can adversely effect the tan because your skin might not absorb all of the solution or the tan could develop lighter. I  recommend at least showering 4 hours before ( no soap or body wash -  as you should have exfoliatied the night or morning before). If you absolutely must shower before your appointment (after a gym workout etc) do not use very hot water, and again no soap or body wash and make it a quick rinse.

take extra care to exfoliate areas like knees, elbows, heels, top of feet, and ankles..

Use a pumice stone on your feet if necessary.

You may use nail varnish as it will also protect the nails against the browning effects of the tanning solution.

You may wear a dark coloured  bikini or underwear to be tanned in if you wish, but the beauty of Aviva Labs tanning solution is that it is WATER BASED, so will wash out of clothing.

Most ladies prefer to tan topless or some choose to tan naked

Tie long hair up.

Bring loose dark clothing, and open shoes to change into after your tan - (a sarong or gown works well!)

For the first 6 to 8 hours after your tan

do not:

do not: Bath, shower or swim.

do not: Do any exercise that will result in perspiration

do not: Apply lotions or make up.

do not: Wear tight fitting clothing

8 hours to 12 hours after your tan

you may:

Shower or bath to wash all the bronzer off.

Dab skin dry rather than rubbing with a towel

Moisturize the entire body well.

Maintaining and prolonging your tan:

Avoid long, hot showers or baths.

Avoid swimming in swimming pools with a high chlorine content.

The use of water resistant sun block can help to prolong the tan when on the beach or swimming.

Moisturize daily - very important!

Home exfoliation: - Exfoliating gloves or a loofah, mixed with an oil free exfoliant will mechanically scrub off your dead skin cells. Preferably exfoliate in a shower so that the dead skin can wash away.

One of the many homemade recipes is to mix half a cup of sugar with some shower gel (oil free) and thoroughly rub the mixture in little circles over your entire body with the glove or loofah, making sure you reach every inch of your body! Then wash mixture off with warm water. Dont moisturize. The skin must be free of all oils, creams, deodorant etc so there is no barrier when the tan solution is applied.
